Description
Joseph Zarrella was sent to a Civilian Public Service (CPS) camp during World War II for refusing to take up arms as a combatant due to conscientious objection as a Catholic war resister. Though bishops of the Roman Catholic church in the United States encouraged Catholics to fight for their country, some members of the Catholic Worker and other individual Catholics applied for conscientious objector status and were placed by the U.S. government in one of the four CPS camps for Catholics. Zarrella was assigned to CPS Unit Number 15. Camp 15 was located near Stoddard, New Hampshire and was operated by the Association of Catholic Conscientious Objectors. It opened in August 1941 and closed in October 1942. After the camp's closure, men were transferred to CPS Camp No. 54 at Warner, New Hampshire. Both camps were directed by Catholic C.O. Dwight Larrowe, who is also pictured with Zarrella among the photographs.
