  Copy in Merton Center accessioned from Thomas Merton's hermitage in June 2026. There is no marginalia; however, Merton cites the book in a letters to Nora Chadwick (1964-05-26) and Etta Gullick (1964-05-22).

  Handwritten note in book is not in Merton's handwriting. There are very light pencil marks that may be Merton's. Copy was originally marked as belonging to the "Brothers Novitiate" library. Merton references Butler's book in a letter of April 15, 1959 to Father Mark Weidner, O.C.S.O. Accessioned from Thomas Merton's hermitage in June 2026.

  This copy was accessioned in 2026 from Merton's hermitage. The English translation has only scant marks, and not necessarily by Merton. It was stamped as a book in Gethsemani's guest house library before moving to the hermitage. Merton references receiving the French edition in his journals of 1948 March 25.
