Biographical Text

A life-long activist for peace, Forest first cames into contact with Merton through Dorothy Day while Forest was at the Catholic Worker in New York. He was active in the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) and started the Catholic Peace Fellowship (CPF), an affiliate program of FOR, to assist those trying to obtain Conscientious Objector status in 1964. In 1977, Forest assumed the duty of General Secretary of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR) based in the Netherlands.

Correspondence with James H. Forest who was involved in the Catholic Worker movement and started the Catholic Peace Fellowship. This is a two-page letter from Forest to Merton discussing a recent visit with Tom Cornell. The CNVA abbreviation is the Committee for Nonviolent Action.

Thomas Merton's letter to James Forest from January 29, 1962 was published in the February 1962 issue of the Catholic Worker. The letter references the General Strike for Peace, a protest against militarism, the "war economy", and nuclear testing at the U.S. AEC (Atomic Energy Commission ). The protest was held at New York Operations Office of the Atomic Energy Commission, at Hudson and Houston Streets in New York City. The letter was distributed during the second day of the sit down strike.
